In July of 1999, Pamida was acquired by Shopko Stores, Inc., a highly successful discount retailer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Pamida’s operating strategy is focused on small rural communities where it can be the principal mass merchandise retailer. Approximately 92% of the stores operate in markets with trade populations under 29,000.

Approximately 23% of sales are derived from Softlines merchandise (men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, and jewelry and accessories), the balance, or 77%, are derived from Hardlines merchandise (toys, home furnishings, housewares, stationary, domestics, seasonal, etc.). Additionally, the Company currently operates over 87 in-store pharmacies.
